2010 Membership Dues

Membership dues for Almost Home and Exit 52 are remaining the same as last season.

Exit 52 Dues for 2010 are $250.00 - This does NOT include the cost of footware, gloves or the cost of your rifle should you earn a spot on the rifle line.
Almost Home Dues for 2010 are $125.00 - This does NOT include the cost of footware.
It is my hope that a parent will take the Fundraising Chair Position so that students will have at least a couple of opportunities to raise money for their dues. This could include the Pizza Kit Sale, a Cookie Dough Sale or any other fundraiser the fundraising chair wants to run. Payment plans will be made available to those who cannot pay in a lump sum. More information will be available soon on the the payment schedule.

The Winter Guard program will be holding several general fundraisers that all guard members are expected to participate in if at all possible. I hope that those will include a dinner fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings, a dinner fundraiser at Noodle & Company as well as the Program for the Home Show in January.

If you received an MCGC Scholarship at Championships last year please get the redemption coupon to Mrs. Mac as soon as possible. :)

Parent Jobs for 2010

Welcome to the 2010 season. Another great season is just around the corner. With that being said, there are now many roles to fill within our organization. I am looking for parents to fill the following roles. Anyone is welcome to help, even if you are a first year guard parent. All chairpersons/coordinators will be given a staff badge good for free admission into every MCGC event. This is just my way of saying thank-you for the extra effort in making things run smoothly again this season. You will essentially be the core of what I hope will turn into the Winter Guard boosters. The Winter Guard Program cannot run without your help. Please consider stepping into one of these roles to make this our best season yet. :)

Parent Jobs for 2010
(Please contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer to take a position. Although these positions have not been given formal names in the past. Those who have done these jobs in the past will be given the opportunity to continue if they choose to before the job is given to another parent. )
1. Fundraising Chairperson - Organize and run all fundraisers for the guards. Work with the Home Show Program Coordinator to distribute Ad Sales Packets to all guard members and collect money from ad sales. I have information for several fundraisers including Noodle & Company, Little Caesars, Cookie Dough and Buffalo Wild Wings. You may organize and run as many fundraisers as you see fit. :) Car Washes will be a good idea for the off season.
2. Prop Coordinator - Work with the instructional staff to design and build props, paint the floor, assist in the loading and unloading of props at MCGC competitions.
3. Sewing Coordinator - Coordinate the sewing of uniforms, show flags and mini-flags to be sold at MCGC Championships.
4. Home Show Volunteer Coordinator - Coordinate all volunteer workers for our home show on January 30. There is a page on this wiki already set up to help with this.
5. Home Show Program Coordinator - Work with the Fundraising Chairperson to distribute Ad Sales Packets to all guard members. Collect all ad copy. Layout the program and prepare for printing. You will essentially be the editor of the home show program. You will not be responsible for collecting any money.
6. Home Show Concessions Coordinator - Coordinate the concession stand for our home show on January 30. This does NOT include lining up volunteers. The volunteer coordinator will do this but you will need to communicate to make sure that all shifts are covered.
7. Home Show Signage Coordinator - Coordinate all signage for the home show on January 30. This will include signs to be hung up inside the building as well as signs for the parking lots. (Signs for inside the building are for the most part already printed and may be reused from one year to the next.)
8. Exit 52 Store Coordinator - Inventory all merchandise and communicate with Mac when things need to be reordered. Coordinate the putting together of mini-flags to be sold at MCGC Championships. (The sewing coordinator will work on coordinating the sewing of the mini-flags and poles will be provided by Mac.)
9. Banquet Coordinator - Coordinate the end of the year celebration. There will be funds available to help pay for this.

This is WGI. . .

Have you ever wondered what is Winter Guard? Here are just a few short videos that will help answer that question. Winter Guard International (WGI) is the national competitive circuit for indoor winter guards and drum lines. The Lowell guards compete in the Michigan Color Guard Circuit (MCGC) which is a local version of WGI within Michigan.

These videos came from the "What is WGI" video contest held by WGI in 2007. I hope you enjoy these and that they help you better understand this activity that I have come to love so much over the years. -Mac

Flower Sale Update

The volunteer schedule is now listed on our wiki. You can check it out at http://exit52.pbworks.com/ Feel free to add your name or call me and I will add it for you. We still need people for Sunday and Monday and also need help repotting flowers. Remember, the money earned goes directly toward your dues for next year. It's easier than selling pizzas and it's 100% profit!

The last area that would help our sale is the donation of perennials. If you have a surplus of any kind of perrenial that you could donate please consider it. The more flowers and plants we have the better the sale will be. Hostas and any kind of day lillies are great and they love to be split. I don't recommned potting them up until jsut before the sale though. They will look better if they are freshly dug. I will post the address of the sale and the drop off spot with the next update.

The last note about fundraising is that we are in need of a fundraising coordinator for the upcoming season. Organizing the various fundraisers has gotten to be took much for the staff to do while keeping the guard going throughout the fall and winter seasons. Please consider if this is something you would like to take on and call me. We will also be taking parent volunteers soon to be the show host coordinator, the volunteer coordinator, a PR coordinator and many other exciting positions. If you have any interest in taking a leadership role within our parent group please let me know.

Memorial Day Flower Sale

The Winter Guard has been offered the opportunity to man the yearly perennial sale on Memorial Day weekend this year. All proceeds would go directly to the winter guard.
The sale will run Saturday - Monday of Memorial Day weekend. Hours would be approximately 8-5 on Saturday 5/23, 10-4 on Sunday5/24 and 9-2 on Monday 5/25 with all sales suspended during the parade.

I am going to try to fill shifts as follows:
*We can use more people but are looking for the numbers below as a minimim.*
4-5 People on Saturday 8am-12:30pm
4-5 People on Saturday 12:30pm-5pm

2-3 People on Sunday 10am-1pm
2-3 People on Sunday 1pm-4pm

2-3 People on Monday 9am-2pm

We would also need people to start helping to repot the donated plants as they come in and to tag them with colored coded price tags. A few people would need to be almost "on call" the week of the sale in case large amounts of plants get dropped off all at once and need to be repotted.
If you are interested please call me 292.4802 or email me exit-52@hotmail.com asap so I can sign you up.

A middle school parent is in charge of this event and she told me that last year the International Club made over $2000 over the course of the weekend. This would be an excellent way for kids and parents alike to pay next years dues now and also to help cushion the gerenal fund for next season.

Money will be applied to member dues according to the amount of time worked at the sale. Both guard members and parents can volunteer at the sale.

Fundraiser Opportunity for our Guard Program

I got a call today from the person in charge of the volunteer crew for Championships. He let me know that there are about 10 spots that still need to be filled with volunteers. The shifts are about 4 hours long and some are available for Saturday and some for Sunday. Both Exit 52 and Almost Home already have 2 volunteers lined up as part of our requirement for Championships. Any additional volunteers that we provide would get free admission as well as earn $50 for the general fund of Exit 52 and Almost Home. Anyone interested in helping out should give me a call on my cell phone 292.4802 as soon as possible.
Thanks for considering this option. Your help is greatly appreciated. :)

MCGC Championships Information

Here's the plan for Championships weekend. . .

Friday, March 27
Students should plan on bringing their overnight bags and uniforms with them to school unless they have time to go home and be back to school by 3:45. Middle school students may leave their bags in my classroom in the morning. The kids are welcome to hang out in my classroom to watch guard videos before we leave for Saginaw. We will not be making a rest stop on this trip so the kids might want to grab a quick snack after school or bring something for the ride.

3:45 Meet in front parking lot at LMS
4:00 Depart LMS
6:15 Arrive and Check in at the Hampton Inn.
7:00 Dinner* at Fire Mountain Grill in Saginaw.
*The cost per person for dinner is $5 for kids ages 12 and under and $10 for those 13 years and older. This includes a soft drink and an all you can eat buffet featuring all you can eat steak and seafood. This is not the full price but the guard will cover the rest. We have our own area reserved and it should be a very nice dinner. Much better than our Little Caesars feast last year. Please have cash or a check made out to Exit 52 ready when we check in at the hotel. Thanks. :)

Other events for Friday Evening. . .
We may have practice time for Exit 52 Friday evening.
Senior Ceremony Friday night. This is for current Exit 52 members and staff only.

In order to honor that request and to help the kids get ready for the Lakeland competition, we will be holding rehearsal from 1 pm-1o pm at LMS. A dinner break will be given at 6 pm. Pizza will be provided. If you want to bring something other than pizza please feel free to do so. Please bring your own beverages. :)

MCGC Scholarship Applications

There has been some confusion as to the due date of the MCGC Scholarship applications. The due date on the form is March 1st. However when the applications were handed out all guard members were asked to return them to me by Saturday February 21. This was for two reasons. 1st it gives me a few days to look them over and add the items that I am required to add to the application and a few days for fixing things should there be anything wrong and 2nd it give the kids who forgot to get things done a short grace period.

I will take applications up to Friday, February 27, 2009 so that I can get them put together and mailed out by March 1. All applicatons must be turned in to me so I can sign them. I will mail them to the scholarship committee in one big envelope.

Hope this clears things up.
:) Mac

Housing Arrangements for MCGC Championships

This year we will be staying at the Hampton Inn Saginaw. We currently have 13 rooms reserved for guard members and chaperones. I will have a sign up sheet for chaperones later this week. If you don't like the idea of rooming with three middle school or high school kids and would like to reserve your own room for Friday night or would like go get a room for Saturday night please call the Hampton Inn to make your reservation as soon as possible. Rooms are going fast. The group rate we were able to get was $64 + tax and fees etc. The total should be just under $68 per room.

Please note: Friday rooms are for for Friday only. If you are getting a room for Suturday plan on having to check out and check back in.

Notes about the hotel. . .The Hampton Inn offers free wireless internet and a deluxe continental breakfast of over thirty items! There is an outdoor pool but it will be closed for the season. They told me that no ice skating is allowed!

At this point I would plan on meeting at LMS to leave no later than 4:00pm on Friday. More details to come later.

There are a lot of jobs that need to be filled for the day. The event should run from roughly 3:00-10:00. I am willing to split shifts if you can only work part of the day. Just let me know when you are available and I’ll make it work. Most of the jobs are pretty low stress but require a responsible adult. If you are interested in helping out please let me know.
